_ TechnoServe Receives $200,000 Kellogg Foundation Grant for Africa Leadership Initiative

June 28, 2002, Norwalk, CT, USA -- President and CEO Peter A. Reiling announced today that TechnoServe has received a $200,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan to help establish the Africa Leadership Initiative in Mozambique and South Africa. This grant reflects the partnership between TechnoServe and the Leadership Regional Network for Southern Africa (LeaRN).

Modeled after the highly successful Henry Crown Fellowship program of the Aspen Institute, the Africa Leadership Initiative seeks to develop the next generation of community-spirited leaders in Africa. Starting this year, 20 young leaders are being selected from each of four countries/regions on the African continent - for a total of 80 - to participate in four five-day leadership seminars plus up to 12 special networking events over four years. Each participant is also expected to complete a high-impact "Community Leadership Project."

"The purpose of the Africa Leadership Initiative is to develop motivated, effective and responsible young leaders who are drawn primarily from business but also from government and the nonprofit sector," said TechnoServe Board Member and Aspen Institute Chairman William E. Mayer. "With the generous support of the Kellogg Foundation and others, this Initiative will create a cohesive network of leaders who are prepared to move from 'success to significance' in their lives by helping to create meaningful social change in their communities and countries."

TechnoServe has partnered with the Aspen Institute, DataBank Financial Services of Ghana and InfoTech Investment Group of Tanzania to launch the Africa Leadership Initiative in Ghana (March of 2002) and in East Africa, including Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda (June of 2002), followed by Mozambique (December 2002) and South Africa (September 2003). The Africa Leadership Initiative is also being funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development.
