Barloworld, the international industrial brand management company
based in Johannesburg, has joined forces with TechnoServe to help
sponsor a four-day leadership seminar in South Africa from October
9-13. Barloworld is generously donating the use of its conference
facilities near Pilgrim's Rest, in the province of Mpumalanga.
This is the latest in a series of conferences and seminars that TechnoServe
is holding in collaboration with the Aspen Institute and local business
leaders in Ghana, Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa. The purpose
of these gatherings is to encourage emerging business leaders in Africa
to play a more active role in promoting equitable social and economic
development in their countries. Sixteen leaders drawn from across
South Africa's business, government and non-profit sectors will participate
in the October event, which is patterned after the "Executive
Seminar" of the Aspen Institute.
Through reading and discussing selections from the works of classic
and modern writers -- including Aristotle, Rachel Carson, Lee Kwan
Yew and Julius Nyerere -- it is hoped that these leaders will deepen
their understanding of what constitutes "a good society"
and renew their resolve to help create one in their own country. The
seminar will be co-moderated by Keith Berwick -- Executive Director
of the Aspen Institute's Henry Crown Fellowship Program, an advanced
leadership development program for high-achieving young executives
and professionals -- and Peter A. Reiling, TechnoServe's President
and CEO and a 1998 Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute. TechnoServe/Aspen's
local partner in the Initiative is Isaac Shongwe, Chairman of the
Letsema Foundation and a 2002 Henry Crown Fellow.
"We are supporting this initiative because we believe that fostering
the right kind of leadership is a key element in the future success
of South Africa," said Mark Drewell, Head of Corporate Communications
at Barloworld.
This South Africa seminar will lay the foundation for the 2003 launch
of TechnoServe's Africa Leadership Initiative there. Designed to develop
the next generation of community-spirited leaders in Africa, the Africa
Leadership Initiative is already underway in Ghana and East Africa.
Barloworld's in-kind donation is valued at nearly $30,000. Barloworld
joins the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the West Foundation, the U.S. Agency
for International Development and others in supporting the Africa
Leadership Initiative.
