Dr. Survé is an ardent philanthropist and founder and executive chairman to one of Africa’s most successful investment holding companies, the Sekunjalo Group. The Sekunjalo Group is headquartered in South Africa and operates across the African continent. It has an investment portfolio of 192 investments with an intrinsic market value of 4 billion USD. Survé Philanthropies, the philanthropic arm of the Survé family which is responsible for seven foundations relating to children, women and human’s rights, education, music, arts and culture, and healthcare, is the recipient of 90% of the profits and dividends of the Sekunjalo Group.
Dr. Survé is also the chairman of Africa’s largest print media group, the Independent Media Group which has 24 major titles and 10 million readers daily, including the only pan African newspaper, the African Independent. In 2015, Sekunjalo founded Africa’s first news syndication service, the African News Agency (ANA) which currently has an intrinsic value excess of a billion USD. One of Africa’s largest ecommerce groupings Loot.co.za is also part of the technology media investments of the Sekunjalo Group. Dr. Survé serves on a number of multi-lateral institutions and global organisations. He is a founding member and has twice been honoured by Former President of the US, Bill Clinton for his contribution to the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). He serves as a founding member of the BRICS Business Council, appointed by the President of South Africa as one of five members. He was recently appointed Chair of the South African chapter of the BRICS Business Council and chairs the ICT working group of the council. He is a regular Davos participant and serves as the first chairman of the Global Growth Companies Advisory Board and vice chairman of the Global Agenda Council (GAC) for Emerging Multinationals. He is a member of the G20 B20 Task Teams as well as the United Nations Private Sector Forum. On the invitation of President Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Kgalema Motlanthe and Jacob Zuma, he has participated on many advisory working groups and joined the presidents on state visits as part of the business advisory delegation. Dr. Survé has been the recipient of many awards for business excellence, economic empowerment and philanthropy. Some of his highlighted awards include: one of Africa’s most influential leaders by Africa Magazine; his honour by Mayor Higgins of the City of New Orleans; and appointment as Honorary Consul for Cape Town of Finland. Similarly, the Sekunjalo companies have received many awards including; top business performance awards and top empowerment companies more than any other companies in South Africa for their contribution towards economic empowerment and sustainability. Dr. Survé is regularly invited as a key note speaker at a number of international conferences and multinational gatherings. He is an alumnus of the Prince of Wales Business & Environment programme hosted by the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, a fellow of the African Leadership Initiative, a patron of the South Africa-Italy Summit, co-chairman of the South Africa Saudi Arabia Business Council, a patron of GASAID, a patron of the World Children Prize for the Rights of the child, a founder member of the Siemens Global Sustainability Advisory Board, a member of the YPO, a patron of the South Africa Soong Ching Ling Foundation, and twice honoured by the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business. In 2011, Dr. Survé had the honour of co-hosting the Nobel Laureates Symposium on Climate Change at COP 17 in Durban, South Africa along with the Stockholm Environment Institute.
